We watch great movies from around the world to learn more about Jews and Judaism, history, culture, values, meaning -- and just to laugh.
Our goal is whether you’ve seen these films before or are watching them for the first time, you’ll get a richer experience at our meetings when you exchange impressions and ideas they generate with others and sometimes get new information from the filmmakers and other guest speakers.
To Join:
You’ll begin getting our news of coming attractions, including the film we’re watching the current month. You don’t have to leave home to see it because we’ll tell you how you can stream it. There’s no cost for membership, and most movies rent for a few dollars. Many are suitable for all ages, so you can often schedule a family movie evening with the children.
Sometimes we’ll send you additional information on the films, or you may want to find out more for yourself on the Internet. Then get ready to share your thoughts with other members on the third Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. (unless a holiday makes us change the date). Most of the meetings will be on Zoom, but occasionally we’ll have a special live program at Hamakom.
Our film society is open to anyone interested in Jewish films, whether they are Hamakom members or not, Jews or not -- or live in Southern California or not. So, if you know family and friends who might enjoy being in the West Valley Jewish Film Society, let them know they can watch our films and join us at the Zoom meetings.
April Selection:
"Academic Antisemitism in America Today"
Program includes three films and guest speaker,
Film Discussion will be on April 17 at 7:00 PM.
Films to watch:
- "Killing America" - available 4/10 to 4/18
- This documentary from Seventh Art Releasing details how parents of students in the San Francisco Bay area discovered that activist teachers, known for their diversity and tolerance, spread falsehoods about the Israel-Palestinian conflict that led to a surge in antisemitism.
- "American Miseducation"
- A young reporter goes to campuses across the country to speak to anti-Israel activists and Jewish students to find out how the most educated generation in U.S. history became sympathetic to terrorism.
- "Settler Colonialism and Drivers of Anti-Israel Sentiment"
- This is an interview with Adam Hirsch, author of the recently published book "On Settler Colonialism: Ideology, Violence, and Justice." In it, he talks about how the same ideas that inspired land acknowledgments, those statements at public events that recognize the native Americans who once dwelt in that location, became twisted into hatred for Israel and Jews.
