Leadership Transition Frequently asked questions
1. Why are Rabbi Vogel and Rabbi Camras transitioning from their roles?
Rabbis Vogel and Camras have been honored to serve their respective communities for a combined 56 years. After much reflection and consideration, they have decided to transition to Rabbi Emeritus status beginning in July 2026. This is not a departure, but rather a shift in how they will continue to engage with and support our community in new and meaningful ways.
2. What does this transition mean for our community?
This transition marks the beginning of a new chapter for Hamakom, one that builds on the incredible foundation of faith, connection, and commitment that our community embodies. While leadership will evolve, the heart of our congregation remains strong. Rabbis Vogel and Camras will continue to be part of our community, offering guidance and support throughout this process and beyond.
3. What is the timeline for the transition?
The transition will take place in July 2026. Between now and then, we will engage in a thoughtful, open process to identify our next senior rabbi and ensure a seamless transition of leadership.
4. How will the congregation be involved in selecting the next senior rabbi?
A transition committee is being formed to guide the search for our next senior rabbi. This committee will ensure that your voices are heard and that we select a leader who embodies the values and vision of our community. In the coming weeks, opportunities will be provided for congregants to share their perspectives, questions, and hopes for the future.
5. What role does the Board of Directors play in this transition?
The Board of Directors is committed to ensuring a smooth and successful transition by providing strong leadership and open communication throughout the process. The Board is responsible for:
- Overseeing the rabbinic search process in partnership with the transition committee.
- Ensuring continuity of spiritual and community life so that services, education, and programming continue uninterrupted.
- Engaging and listening to the congregation through surveys, focus groups, and one-on-one conversations to understand the community’s needs and priorities.
- Providing guidance and support to clergy, staff, and lay leaders as they navigate this transition together.
6. Will this transition impact services and programs?
No, our services, learning opportunities, and community programs will continue as usual. The leadership team is committed to maintaining continuity and ensuring that Hamakom remains a place of spiritual growth, connection, and tradition.
7. How will the transition be managed to ensure stability?
The Board and leadership team are actively planning for a smooth transition. This includes engaging the community in the search process, ensuring open communication, and maintaining our programs and traditions without disruption. Rabbis Vogel and Camras will also be available to support and guide the congregation through this period.
8. What role will Rabbis Vogel and Camras have after the transition? What is a Rabbi Emeritus?
A Rabbi Emeritus is an honor bestowed upon rabbis who have long tenure with their synagogue. It is an unpaid honor; however, the synagogue and Rabbi Emeritus can negotiate a contract annually or ad hoc for a time commitment or specific responsibilities with compensation.
As Rabbis Emeritus, the roles of Rabbis Vogel and Camras for the transition year July 2026-June 2027 will be defined through a collaborative process involving the Board and the Rabbis over the coming months to have them remain active in the community they cherish, continuing to share in its joys, support members through challenges, and celebrate our congregation’s vibrancy in new ways.
The goal is to ensure their presence remains a gift to the congregation, offering guidance, continuity, and support in ways that complement the leadership of our next Senior Rabbi.
Ultimately, the specific scope of their involvement will be developed thoughtfully to balance their continued contributions with the vision and leadership of the new Senior Rabbi. Their presence will remain a valued and enduring part of our community’s future.
9. How can we stay informed about the transition?
Regular updates will be shared through email, the synagogue website, and community meetings. Congregants are encouraged to reach out with any questions or feedback throughout the process.
10. What can congregants do to support this transition?

12. Why transition now?
After 30 years of dedicated service as pulpit rabbis, both Rabbis Vogel and Camras believe that now is the right time to help our community prepare for its next chapter. They recognize that the needs of our congregation continue to evolve, and they feel it is time for 21st-century rabbinic leadership to guide us into the future. This thoughtful transition allows the community to honor their extraordinary contributions while embracing new opportunities for growth and leadership.
13. Why transition together at the same time?
The relationships our rabbis have cultivated within our community—spanning individuals, families, and groups—are deeply interconnected. Transitioning together ensures that the process is cohesive and consistent for everyone, from leadership to congregants. By going through this process as one community, we can navigate change together with clarity, collaboration, and a shared vision for the future. This unified approach strengthens our ability to move forward as a resilient and vibrant congregation.
14. What does this mean for ME?
Our Rabbis will continue to play an active and meaningful role in our congregation even after transitioning to Emeritus status. They are committed to being present, offering their guidance, wisdom, and care during FY 26-27, as we welcome a new Senior Rabbi. The new rabbinic leadership will embrace their presence as a vital part of the transition process, ensuring that the change feels smooth and supportive for every member of the community. Your relationship with our Rabbis and your place in our congregation remain priorities throughout this journey.
15. What if we don’t find a desirable new Sr. Rabbi? Will one of the Rabbis stay?
Our rabbis are prepared to step into their new roles as Rabbi Emeriti and continue supporting our community in meaningful ways. As part of the search process, the Search Committee will proactively develop contingency plans to ensure continuity in leadership should the ideal candidate not be identified within the expected timeframe. These options may include interim leadership, guest clergy, or other transitional strategies to maintain the strength and stability of our congregation as we continue the search for the right Senior Rabbi to guide us into the future.
